CAR HIRE:

Bear in mind that petrol stations are not plentiful in many parts of the Highlands. Don't let your tank get too low before filling up. They also close quite early in some parts.

Car rentals are easy to use and make good sense in the Highlands since public transport is scarce in some parts.

Sea:

Western Islands (includes Harris, Lewis, Eigg, Rum, Barra, Benbecula, Uist & Mull) - Caledonian MacBrayne operate car and passenger ferry services to the islands on the west.

If you were to take the ferry to Mull from Oban you could come back via Fishnish or Lochaline and cross over just north of Ballachulish on The Corran Ferry  to Ardgour - generally leaves about every half hour but for precise details check site. Check the CalMac site for times. The ferry's a lot cheaper this way and it includes some lovely scenery.
