Hold onto your hats for Scotland has a lot to offer. When we think of winter sports in Scotland we think first of skiing so let's look at a few resorts:

Glencoe

Glencoe  has Scotland's Steepest On-Piste Run. It operates 7 days a week 'With 7 lifts and 19 runs, Glencoe is by no means the largest ski centre in Scotland, but it's still a firm favourite with many Scottish skiers and boarders thanks to its unique and exhilarating terrain, and a snow holding record second to none.'

For first-timers there are classes; you may learn with people of your own standard or take private instruction

Located 74 miles north of Glasgow Glencoe is situated on the A82, 26 miles south of Fort William and 23 miles north of Crianlarich

 

 


Nevis Range offers great terrain for skiers of all abilities, beginners make use of the variety of green runs literally a step off the gondola, whilst intermediates are spoilt for choice with over 25 groomed blue and red runs. Nevis Range  

Experts are presented with the challenges of the 'Back Corrie', an off piste expanse with cornices, drop-offs and ridges to explore, this is by common consent the best off-piste in the country...offering great terrain for snowboarders of all abilities ..Freestylers should look out for the terrain park, with rails and jumps under continuous construction at sites with the best snow build up..

First timers take a look at the Ski and Board school Whether you are a complete beginner, taking to the slopes for the first time, or an experienced skier/boarder looking to improve your technique, the Nevis Range Ski and Board School Instructors will put you at ease

Glenshee

Cairnwell by Braemar. The area is particularly suited to intermediate skiers - terrain offers cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Offers pisted runs of 40km, the longest being 2km. 38 runs, 10 green, 13 blue, 13 red and 2 black. Three mountain restaurants and off piste skiing, equipment and clothing  hire. Beginners packages.
 

Glenshee is situated on the A93, 9 miles south of Braemar and 25 miles north of Blairgowrie

 

 

 


CairnGorm

Located in the CairnGorm National Park this has become a very popular ski resort. It should suit all standards from beginner to expert. Snowboarders have their own Terrain Park which is maintained by a squad of volunteers. Equipment hire and tuition available. There is a snow sports ski school and snowboard school so it is a great place to start. The recently opened funicular railway gives quick and interesting access to the top of the mountain where you will also find a restaurant and shop. The Ptarmigan Bowl (see cam) is a good place to begin while Coire Cas is a good intermediate run. For the experienced there is Coire na Ciste. There is 37km of pisted runs, the longest being 2.2km.  Aviemore, the nearest town is a resort town so provides ample shops, eating houses and hotels.

Lecht            

        Skiing The Lecht               Snowboarding The Lecht

2090 ft above sea level amid the beauty of the Eastern Cairngorms at Strathdon.  It is an ideal place for youngsters to learn. It has snow making equipment and is a designated snowboard fun park - there's snowtubing and deval karting. The ticket office and ski and snowboard hire are close to the White Hare Cafe near the car parks.  There is ski and snowboard school beside the nursery tows. You can also hire ski, snowboards and clothing. The shop provides all your forgotten items! There is a restaurant and snack bar. The atmosphere is relaxed so if you're a beginner it's a good place to start, not that there aren't some terrifying places like black Harrier, only for the experienced! There is 20km of pisted runs,  longest being 900m.
 

Straddling the A939 on the Cockbridge to Tomintoul road, Lecht is easily reached from Speyside and Aviemore.

 


 

Climbers and walkers:

 

Climbers and hillwalkers.'Aonach Mor is little more than a stone's throw away from Ben Nevis . The two main climbing areas are Coire an Lochain and the West Face. Given their altitude they offer some of the most reliable winter climbing in the area Avalanche report

A winter mountaineering course will give you all the skills needed to operate in winter including snowcraft and ice-axe use, avalanche awareness, navigation, basic ropework and emergency response
