Aviemore Ring Cairn (about 2400-2200 BC)
'It is a Clava-type cairn, named
after the site of Clava in Strathnairn. Excavations at similar
cairns have unearthed fragments of burnt human bone...'

Ballintomb Standing Stones
'Four
standing stones mark a north-east / south-west alignment along a low
ridge to the west of the River Spey...'
OS sheet 36: from the bridge in Dulnain
Bridge, follow the path down the east bank of the river to the line
of the old railway. Follow the railway about 200 metres past the
farm buildings and turn south where the stones are located on a low
ridge above the Spey. Waterproof footwear

Carrbridge, Old Packhorse Bridge

Constructed in '1717. The bridge was paid
for out of the church income of the parish of Duthil. Damaged by
floods in the 18th century, it was finally brought to its present
ruinous state by the infamous flood of 1829'
Located in the centre of Carrbridge, immediately west of the
present road bridge. Free parking.

Congash Chapel and Pictish Symbol Stones
'The
site of an old chapel is indicated by an oval enclosure, now filled
with field stones. On the southern edge of the bank are two Pictish
carved stones...'
Park in the disused quarry about 350 metres east of the entrance
to Congash Farm on the A95. The site can be reached through a gate
at the back of the quarry, and is located at the far end of the

Duff House

Duff House (1735 -
1742), the magnificent Baroque mansion built by William Adam for
William Duff M.P., Lord Braco and later Earl of Fife, has undergone
complete refurbishment as a Country House Gallery.

Dun Da Lamh
Strathmashie, Laggan.
Iron Age hill fort hidden in the trees. 'As
with many other such sites, it may be that Dun-da Lamh has its
origins in the early Iron Age (about 500 BC)'

Easter Raitts Township
'The footings of several houses and other
buildings, as well as a hollowed roadway, can be clearly seen in the
grass...Visitors to the excavations are
welcome - but please check dates and other details with the Highland
Archaeology Unit or the Folk Museum.'
Parking is the same as for Raitts Cave, but at the top gate
follow the track up the field to the second field gate on the right.
Go through this and the township is in front of you. Waterproof

Glen Banchor deserted villages
'The
buildings survive as little more than the grass-covered outlines of
long houses, byres and enclosures...'
Take the unclassified road from the centre of Newtonmore to the
car-park at the road-end. Please heed all estate notices. Waterproof

Raitts Cave
'This impressive underground structure,
known locally as An Uaimh Mhor (the Great Cave) probably dates to
the period AD 100 - 400 (later Iron age). Its massively built walls
create an underground tunnel...'
Park in Lynchat village on the B9152, and walk
through the tunnel under the A9, following the track to the left.
Pass through the gate at the top of the track and the souterrain is
located down the slope to the left. Waterproof footwear

century barracks. Burned down in 1746.

Sluggan Bridge
'This
beautiful, single span bridge on General Wade's Military Road was
constructed in the early 1830s, following the destruction of the
previous bridge in a great flood in 1829...'
Take the unclassified road from Carrbridge signposted to the
station. Pass under the A9 and continue for a further 2.3km. Park in
the lay-by where the old Military Road crosses, then follow it down
to the River Dulnain to the north; 1.5km walk. Waterproof footwear

Toum burial cairn
'This is a massive example of the burial
cairns that are found in northern Scotland. In the Neolithic period
(c.4000-2,400 BC)...'
OS sheet 36: turn off the A95 onto the track leading to Ouchnoire
Farm. Park where the track branches, bear left and continue for 200
metres. Sensible footwear
