The Cairngorms don't actually have a great deal of castles so as not to disappoint you we've included castles  which are 'over the mountains' in Grampian which really isn't so far.

'A 16th-century tower house converted into a barracks for Government troops in 1748. Its last military use was to control the smuggling of illicit whisky between 1827 and 1831. Still complete and with its 18th-century star-shaped fortification

Castle Fraser

This magnificent Castle, one of the 'Castles of Mar' dates from 1575. The most elaborate Z-plan castle in Scotland, and one of the grandest Castles of Mar.

Huntly Castle

Huntly Castle

Kildrummy Castle

Kildrummy Castle
These are the ruins of a 13th century stone courtyard castle which was dismantled after the first Jacobite rising in 1715.

  Lochindorb Castle   The 13th century island fortress-home of the "Celtic Attila", the Wolf of Badenoch.  'Built on an island by John 'the Black', head of the great Norman Comyn family of Badenoch, in the late 13th century...was knocked down at the command of James II...'
'On the unclassified road joining the B9007 to the A939; the best viewpoint is the lay-by located on the roadside north of Lochindorb Lodge. Note: there is no access to the castle island'
