Information about the hotel

The Barns Hotel is situated in a beautiful riverside location, within 3.5 acres of landscaped gardens, yet just 10 miles from the M1 and 8 miles from A1.

The tranquil setting offers views of the great River Ouse and the local country park and wonderful grounds in which to stroll and relax. For more strenuous activities, guests have access to the local Oasis Fitness and Leisure Club. Samuel Whitbread, founder of the brewing business, was born in the main house in 1720 and it remained within the Whitbread family until 1890s, becoming a hotel in 1987.

  • Cecil Higgins Art Gallery (4 miles) - The Gallery is an unusual combination of recreated Victorian Mansion (originally the home of the Higgins family) and adjoining modern gallery housing an internationally renowned collection of watercolours, prints and drawings, ceramics, glass and lace.
  • Bedford Museum (4 miles) - It is situated within the gardens of Bedford Castle, beside the Great Ouse Embankment and is adjacent to Cecil Higgins Art Gallery. The charming courtyard and well laid out galleries provide an excellent setting for the varied nature of the collections.
  • Moot Hall (9 miles) - Elstow Moot Hall was built in the late 15th century as a market-house in connection with the village fairs. It was used for storing the stalls and other equipment and as a place for hearing disputes arising from the fairs.

From M1 (j13), follow A421 for approx 10 miles until A603 Sandy/ Bedford exit.
Proceed in the direction of Bedford.
Hotel is on the right at the 2nd roundabout.
