Burn How 'The house on the hill by the stream' is just 200 metres from Lake Windermere. Burn How is where it all begins. Those who enjoy the fresh country air can meander along picturesque woodland trails through unspoilt countryside.

Enjoy a cruise on Lake Windermere or venture further afield and take the ferry across the lake to visit Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter. At the end of the day, relax with family and friends in the congenial atmosphere of the lounge and bar, or on a pleasant summer's evening, take in the beautiful surroundings of our patio and gardens. The layout of The Burn How is refreshingly different to most other hotels. In the main house you will find the reception area, The Burn How Restaurant and the residents’ lounge and bar, whereas all of the hotel’s bedrooms are located outside the main building within our private grounds.

  • Bowness on Winderemere (0 miles) - Bowness-on-Windermere was well known to the poet William Wordsworth: Wordsworth was a regular user of the ferry, which crosses Lake Windermere.
  • Beatrix Potter Museum (2 miles) - This museum takes an intersting look at the many characters of Beatrix Potter.
  • Steamboat Museum (2 miles) - Set in a magnificent location in the heart of Lakeland, Windermere Steamboat Museum houses a unique collection of historic steamboats and motorboats, including the SL Dolly of 1850 the oldest mechanically powered boat in the world.
  • Windermere (3 miles) - The town of Windermere grew around the railway station, about a mile and a half from the lake. The village was originally called Birthwaite, but the railway company decided to call the station after the lake.

Getting there

 

By Car:
- Leave the M6 at junction 36.
- Take the A590 towards Kendal.
- Then take the A591 towards Windermere.
- At this point, you require the A592 towards Bowness.
- Burn How is located just after the boat piers on the junction of the next left-hand turn.
By Rail:
The train station in Windermere is at the entrance to the town.
A taxi will cost around 3 GBP and take less than 5 minutes to get you to Burn How.
